Ski & Snowboard

Ski & Snowboard Resort Review

Portillo , CHILE , strengths are the lack of crowds, the ski in ski out accommodation from the luxurious Hotel Portillo and challenging virgin powder snow.

Portillo Skiing and Snowboarding Terrain

The skiing and snowboarding terrain at Portillo consists of open powder fields, steep powder runs, tight chutes, endless long groomed trails and gentle wide beginner slopes. With so few guests at the one time the resort ensures that after a big snowfall you can still ski or snowboard in virgin powder for days on end.

Advanced Skiing and Snowboarding

The advanced have endless skiing and snowboarding options at Portillo; powder bowls, ungroomed runs, off piste tours and runs so steep and avalanche prone they require special lifts.

The Roca Jack and Condor lifts, serving steep ungroomed terrain, are drag poma like lifts operated by pulley systems pulling five people at once up the slope. They are not hard to master and the steep powder rewards coming down are worth the effort going up!

Portillo recently had a new high speed poma drag lift installed; the 'El Caracara'. It accesses the Primera Quebrada trail giving skiers and snowboarders even more deep powder runs.

A must do is hiring a guide to explore the off piste terrain, the guides will take you safety to some of the largest and deepest powder runs you will find anywhere in the world, the Primavera Run a particular favourite.

Intermediate Skiing and Snowboarding

Intermediates can ski or snowboard on long groomed linking trails of varying steepness across the resort. For a morning warm up run catch the El Plateau Chairlift up for a fast run down the scenic Plateau trail back to the Hotel Portillo Base area.

The Juncalillo Run is the longest run at Portillo; it is steep but not too steep that a confident intermediate could not happily ski or snowboard it. It is where the US Ski Team practices when they visit Portillo.

With 80% of the trails groomed at Portillo intermediates have the option of not having to ski or snowboard in deep powder, however you have the option of popping in and out of uncrowded powder fields at your leisure. If you have never skied or snowboarded in deep powder have a powder lesson and you will never look back!

Beginner Skiing and Snowboarding

Portillo does not a huge amount of beginner terrain; the El Puma T-Bar services the wide and gently sloping El Puma trail where the experienced instructors from the Portillo Ski and Snowboard School will improve your skiing and snowboarding skills dramatically throughout your week long stay.

Once confidence grows catch the Las Lomas Chairlift to access the longer wide, well groomed trails leading down to the Hotel Portillo base area.

Portillo Heli Skiing and Snowboarding

Hotel Portillo operates day heli skiing and snowboarding tours in the surrounding mountains through open powder bowls, deep valleys and steep mountain faces. Guests can expect runs to be as long as 4,000 vertical feet!

Other Activities at Portillo

Other activities at Portillo include snowshoeing tours, swimming in Hotel Portillo’s outdoor swimming pool, using the gym, having a massage or taking a yoga class.

Portillo Shopping

Hotel Portillo has a ski and snowboard rental shop that stocks the latest equipment and gear; it also offers waxing and repair services.

Portillo Restaurants

Tio Bob’s Restaurant located at the top of the El Plateau Chairlift has breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains; it is open for lunch everyday serving BBQ meats accompanied by big salads and cold drinks.

The main dining room in the Hotel Portillo serves four meals a day, breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner. The gourmet dinner cuisine includes fresh seafood, beef and lamb dishes accompanied by an excellent international wine list.

The self serve Cafeteria in the Hotel Portillo is where guests staying at the Inca Lodge eat, for a quick snack head to The Bar for some sushi or sandwiches.

The La Posada Restaurant is located on the Highway leading into the Hotel Portillo car park; it serves local cuisine accompanied by regional music.

Portillo Nightlife

The Bar in the Hotel Portillo has live music every night from 10.30pm onwards, for those who want to keep partying after the band finishes head to the disco, it stays open very late.

Unbelievable skiing - endless powder covered fields - deep wide bowls - almost all pistes groomed every night - with only 500 guests at one time lift queues are unheard of 3. Really really dry powder 4. Entire resort above the tree line 5. All levels of skiers are catered for from very young children to the 'ultra hardcore' extreme skiers looking for the really steep areas and deep snow filled chutes 6. Hotel Portillo - the only place to stay housing only 500 guests - extremely well managed - every need catered for - literally step outside the door directly onto the pistes 7. Heli skiing available - not that you need it
