The village at Mount Hotham, VICTORIA , AUSTRALIA is perched high on top of the summit and has spectacular sweeping views of the extensive terrain falling away below it.
The terrain at Hotham has a vertical drop of close to 400 meters consisting of steep chutes, moguls, groomed corduroy tree lined trails and beginner slopes.
Mt Hotham has a large percentage of terrain suited advanced and intermediate skiers and snowboarders. The double black diamond bowl area where Marys Slide, The Chute and the Gotcha runs are located is some of the steepest and most challenging terrain in Australia. The powder in the trees at the base of the bowl is deep and fun after a good snowfall!
In the mornings the long Hoggs Back trail is good for a few speedy warm up turns before heading right to the Village Chairlift to tackle the bumps and jumps on the Wall Of Death and Hackers Horror.
As with most Australian Resorts intermediate skiers and snowboarders can happily cruise the entire mountain on groomed tree lined trails. The Orchard Chairlift services a back bowl full of challenging intermediate trails while the well groomed wide terrain around the Blue Ribbon Chairlift attracts the crowds on the weekends.
Big D, located on the upper area of Mt Hotham, is where beginners learn to ski and snowboard. The area is gentle and wide, just perfect to learn the basic skills on!
The Summit Run, to the left of The Summit Chairlift, is also a gentle beginner run, once confidence grows try tackling Sun Run as far down as the Road Runner Chairlift.
Hotham’s Snowsports Centre has experienced instructors catering for first timers needs in either single or group lessons plus classes for all levels of skiers and snowboarders.
Mt Hotham has night skiing and snowboarding twice a week throughout the season at the Big D Express Chairlift.
There is always one Terrain Park open at Mt Hotham, a second opens in great snow conditions. The main terrain park is well designed scattered with jumps, tabletops, rails and boxes suitable for intermediate and advanced riders only. It is maintained every night throughout the season.
Mt Hotham has a variety of restaurants and cafes suited to all levels of budget. AJ’S Café, located in Hotham Central, is open everyday for delicious lunches and is fully licensed.
The menu at the Arlberg Avalanche Bistro changes nightly and specialises in gourmet pizza, it is family friendly and inexpensive.
For fine dining you cannot go past Zirky’s Restaurant which is owned by the famous Andrew Blake. He serves excellent imaginative fresh dishes complemented by an extensive wine list. Shopping at Mt Hotham
The Village has ski and snowboard stores all stocked with the latest equipment to buy or hire. Pinnacle Hotham has all the gear you could want as well as Hotham merchandise ranging from mugs to caps and vests! There are also fashion boutiques, gift stores and a fully licensed supermarket.
Mt Hotham never seems to sleep! From 4pm until 8pm Zirky’s Bar serves Tapas and drinks, it’s a good way to unwind and let your muscles relax after a hard day on the slopes.
After dinner Swinders Bar attracts big crowds every night with DJs and live bands playing throughout the season.
The General is the most well known night spot at Mt Hotham, every night something is happening, it could be a dart competition, a well known comedy show or a famous DJ performing, it really caters for all tastes.
Snowmaking equipment has expanded from 17 to 25 hectares ensuring good snow conditions throughout the winter season. Permanent tower guns have been installed on both the Imagine and Snake Gully trails with hydrant points positioned along the Milky Way.
Kat Skiing Adventures will be free in 2008 at Mt Hotham with the purchase of a valid lift pass. Open only to intermediate level and above skiers and snowboarders, snow groomers travel outside the resort boundaries to access the untouched and steep powder terrain of Golden Point.
