BIG SKY

Ski & Snowboard Resort Review

Big Sky MONTANA USA is home to some of the most challenging inbounds terrain in the US along with incredible views across three States and Yellowstone National Park.

Big Sky Skiing and Snowboarding Terrain

Big Sky Resort is made up of two mountains; Lone Mountain and Andesite Mountain. Lone Mountain is the larger and most challenging of the two.

The skiing and snowboarding terrain consists of open powder fields, double black diamond chutes, cliff drops, heavily treed terrain, intense mogul runs, expansive groomed trails and gentle beginner slopes all serviced by a fast and efficient lift system.

Since the 2006/2007 winter season Big Sky Resort and the neighbouring Moonlight Basin Resort are interconnected.  The two resorts offer joint ski passes making them one of the largest interconnected resorts in the USA.

Big Sky’s Lone Mountain

Advanced Skiing and Snowboarding at Big Sky

Operating since 1995 the Lone Peak Tram transports skiers and snowboarders up a vertical rise of 9,180 feet to some of the steepest and most aggressive double black terrain in the US.

In great snow conditions it has a similar feel to heli skiing and snowboarding with the tram giving access to vertical treeless powder fields and tight narrow chutes.

On fresh powder days the queue can be really long for the tram.  Those who can’t wait to make fresh tracks head right from the top of the Gondola to the Challenger Chairlift, this services the steep and wide Big Rock Tongue terrain and the renowned mogul covered Midnight, Moonlight and Highway trails.

For first rate tree skiing and snowboarding go to the trees under the Shedhorn Chairlift on Lone Mountain or the heavily treed War Dance and Mine Shaft terrain on Andesite Mountain

Intermediate Skiing and Snowboarding at Big Sky

While intermediates would probably not want to attempt the ride down from the Lone Peak Tram the mid mountain areas of Big Sky offer intermediates abundant skiing and snowboarding options.

Extended tree lined trails of varying steepness lead down from the top of the Swift Chairlift on Lone Mountain with Lobo and Calamity Jane both fast and challenging.

From the top of the Swift Chairlift turn left to take the Cow Flats trail to the base of the Shedhorn Chairlift where some intermediate trails are left in their natural state (ungroomed).

For a gentle introduction to tree skiing and snowboarding try the trees under the Iron Horse Chairlift the terrain isn’t too steep and the trees are well placed to get some good turns in.

On Andesite Mountain the groomed Silver Knife trail is fast first thing in the morning as is Ambush leading under the Ramcharger Chairlift.

Beginner Skiing and Snowboarding at Big Sky

Beginner trails are located on the lower mountain areas at Big Sky.

Andesite Mountain is where the majority of beginner green trails are found. The winding Pacifier trail located on the right hand side of the Ramcharger Chairlift is excellent for practising big linking turns. For a little extra speed try the shorter but slightly steeper Safari trail.

On Lone Mountain catch the Gondola to the top of the Mr K trail for a long fun run back down to the base. The trails under the Explorer Chairlift offer the gentlest terrain for first timers.

The Big Sky Snowsports School has lessons for first time skiers and snowboarders with experienced instructors.

Big Sky Terrain Park and Halfpipe

The Swifty Terrain Park located under the Swift Chairlift has a wide array of boxes, pipes, barrels and different sized jumps. The well maintained superpipe is located on the left hand side of the Ramcharger Chairlift on Andesite Mountain.
