Off piste awareness and safety courses in Chamonix

Chamonix, France are running off piste awareness and safety courses every Tuesday during the school holidays, from February until 24th April. The aim is to make skiers more aware of the risks associated with off piste skiing.

The free courses are taken by Chamonix experienced Mountain Guides, they run from 9am to 4pm. You must purchase your own lift pass. The location will be announced on the Monday before. Skiers must be 16 years or older.

The course highlights the 4 main important steps of off piste skiing;

1. Off Piste Skiing Information - where, when and how to obtain accurate snow report, avalanche report and piste services before setting off for the day; what to do in the case of an avalanche and how to alert rescuers

2. Off Piste Skiing and Avalanches - how to analyse information gathered before setting off; what equipment to take and practical use of the ARVA (avalanche search and rescue device)

3. Off Piste Skiing in a Group - explaining the different options, cautionary measures and recommendations when skiing in groups; explaining the difference to skiing on marked pistes

4. Off Piste Skiing on the Glaciers - general information about glaciers including crevasses, snow bridges and seracs; additional equipment and safety measures required on glaciers
